South Africa Hunting Bow Requirements

If you are a U.S. hunter traveling with a hunting bow to the country of South Africa, the requirements are different from those for rifles or handguns.

1. No South African Temporary Import Permit for Bows

South Africa does not require a temporary import permit for bows. This applies to both U.S. and international visitors.

2. U.S. Customs Declaration Form 4457

You must complete and submit the U.S. Customs Declaration Form 4457 for your bow. This form proves you own the bow and is required for U.S. Customs to clear it at departure.

• Complete the form in black ink.

• Leave it unsigned until you are in front of a police officer at the U.S. Customs office, who will sign it for you.

• All sections apply, but focus on Section D (Temporary Import/Export Permit), Section E (1–25.4), Section G, and Section I

3. Proof of Ownership

• You must have documentary proof that you own the bow.

• For U.S. citizens, the completed Form 4457 is sufficient proof.

• Keep copies for your return trip.

4. Additional Documents (if applicable)

While not required for bows, some outfitters or safari companies may request:

• Invitation letter from the hunting outfitter (on company letterhead)

• Signed indemnity form and remuneration agreement (provided by the outfitter)

• Full contact and address details, hunting location, and animals to be hunted

5. Packing and Airline Rules

• Pack the bow in an approved hard case with locks and spares

• Ensure it is properly secured for carry-on or checked baggage.

• Check with your airline for their firearms/bow policy (some may have restrictions on carry-on bows).

• If checked in with luggage, ensure the case meets airline and customs requirements.

6. At the Airport

• Present your passport, return flight ticket, and completed Form 4457 at U.S. Customs.

• The officer will sign the form and allow you to proceed.
